Humpback whales: the friendly headliner

Fin whales: the recovering giant

The fin whale is the second-largest animal that has ever lived, after the blue, and one of the quiet conservation success stories of the modern Southern Ocean. Once hunted to a fraction of their numbers, fin whales have returned to historic feeding grounds in spectacular aggregations; survey work has counted thousands of them gathered together off the Peninsula in recent summers, a sight not seen since before industrial whaling. They are identifiable by their sheer size, a tall columnar blow, and a distinctive asymmetry — the right side of the lower jaw is white while the left is dark. The best time to see whales in Antarctica

Timing matters more for whales than for almost any other Antarctic wildlife. Early in the season, in November and early December, whale numbers are still building as animals arrive from their northern breeding grounds. The peak runs from late January through March, when the krill swarms are dense and the whales are present in their greatest numbers and at their most relaxed. Where the whales gather

Certain bays and straits along the Peninsula are reliable whale magnets because the underwater topography concentrates krill. The Gerlache Strait, the Bransfield Strait, Wilhelmina Bay (nicknamed “Whale-mina Bay” by guides for good reason), and the waters around the Antarctic Sound regularly hold dozens of feeding whales. A blue whale produces a single, towering blow up to nine metres tall, straight and unmistakable. Fin whales blow nearly as high in a tall column. Humpbacks make a bushy, balloon-shaped blow around three metres high, often followed seconds later by the raised fluke. Minkes have a low, inconspicuous blow that is easy to miss entirely.
